The Forgotten


She stands there, frozen, unable to move or even look away.
It's as if time itself forgot about her.
The tears roll down her cheeks
as she watches him pick up his bags and walk away.
He turns around to see her smile at him
while hastily wiping the tears away
as she tries to be brave, to be strong for him, but it's hard.
She is already missing him, and he's not even out of her sight.
She smiles when he turns around to grin at her---
it's as if he is saying, "don't worry, I will be back for you."
Her heart is torn between being proud of him for doing his duty,
and her love for him. Her pride stops her from running to him,
sobbing, begging him not to go and clinging for dear life,
but her heart screams for her to do just that.
While she knows that he must go in order to keep everyone free,
to do the job he signed up for,
she also knows that there goes the man she loves,
the man she has vowed to spend the rest of her life with,
the man who thinks he's invincible,
and all she wants is for him to come home safe to her.
She dies a little inside every time he leaves,
but this time it's different.
This time, he won't be back for at least a year,
if he even comes back at all.
But even through all the lonliness and heartache,
she knows she must be strong,
because this is what it means to be the...
